More than 21 tonnes of waste was collected on day one of the 14th Clean Up UAE campaign organised by Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) on Saturday.

The annual drive saw the participation of 2,775 volunteers, who scattered around Nad Al Sheba, armed with biodegradable trash bags.

Visiting all the major cities and towns of the UAE, the 10-day-long campaign will culminate on December 16 at Dibba Al Hisn.

Commenting on the occasion, Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of EEG, said: "On the occasion of the 44th National Day we the people, both citizens and residents of the UAE, are working hand in hand to show our gratitude to this nation that has given us so much. The response we have got from the community for this year's campaign has been overwhelming.”

She added that year after year the Clean Up UAE Campaign has seen dedicated participation from corporate organisations, government agencies, students, families and individuals. The continuity of the Clean Up UAE campaign for the last 14 years is solely due to the diligence and wholehearted participation of every individual.

"While the core message behind the event has not changed over the years it is essential to reiterate the necessity of preserving the environment by maintaining cleanliness, recycling and making this an integral part of the daily culture of the UAE society,” she added.
