Hard disk drive maker Western Digital announced Wednesday that it will pay $19 billion for SanDisk, a leader in flash memory.

Western said the acquisition will help transform it into a data storage solutions company "with global scale, extensive product and technology assets, and deep expertise in non-volatile memory."
