 US stocks dived Friday after Britain's surprise vote to leave the European Union, joining a global equity rout amid rising uncertainty about the future of Europe.

At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was at 17,401.09, down 3.4 percent. The drop of about 610 points was the index's biggest single-day loss in nearly five years.

The broad-based S&P 500 dropped 3.6 percent to 2,037.34, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index sank 4.1 percent to 4,707.98.
