Uber said Friday it was suspending its controversial low-cost UberPOP service in France, six months after it was banned by the government and following a spate of strikes by taxi drivers.

"Yes, it's true," said spokesman Gregoire Kopp. UberPOP was a service that put customers in touch with unlicenced private drivers, angering taxi drivers who have held nationwide strikes in recent weeks.
