Spain's National Court said Wednesday it has opened a preliminary investigation into German carmaker Volkswagen for possible fraud in the wake of the scandal over pollution-cheating software installed in diesel engines by the company.

The case was opened following a request from public prosecutors who argued Volkswagen may have committed fraud, violated consumer protection laws and committed crimes against the environment due to pollution from its cars.
