The former prime minister of Moldova was detained Thursday over a $1-billion "fraud of the century" scandal that sparked mass protests and demands for the resignations of top officials.

The chief prosecutor has accused former prime minister Vlad Filat, who heads the pro-European Liberal Democrat Party of Moldova (LDPM), of withdrawing some $250 million from the impoverished country's banking system.
