Inflation in Europe's largest economy Germany fell back sharply in March, preliminary official data showed Thursday, after overshooting the European Central Bank's target the previous month.

Prices rose 1.6 percent compared with March 2016, figures from federal statistics authority Destatis showed, a 0.6-percentage point decrease from February's figure and below analyst forecasts of 1.8 percent.
