The EU said Friday it has opened an anti-trust probe into the planned multi-billion-euro merger of US delivery service giant FedEx and Dutch rival TNT Express.

"The European Commission has opened an in-depth investigation to assess whether the proposed acquisition of TNT Express by FedEx Corporation is in line with the EU merger regulation," the bloc's executive arm said in a statement.
