Several people were killed and others wounded on Tuesday when an explosion of unknown origin rocked the historic centre of Turkey's largest city Istanbul, television reports said.

The reports said the authorities were studying the possibility the blast in the Sultanahmet neighbourhood was caused by a suicide bomber but there was no official confirmation of this or of the number of casualties.
