US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday that they had agreed that Syria must emerge from civil war as a unified secular state.

At a joint news conference after a day of international talks, Kerry said Syria's state institutions must remain intact, even if he and his Russian counterpart had disagreed over whether or not President Bashar al-Assad should step down immediately.
