Polls opened in Guatemala Sunday in a general election held amid public disenchantment with government just days after the country's president was jailed on corruption charges.

Calm prevailed as voting began around the country at 7:00 am (1300 GMT), with 7.5 million people eligible to cast ballots to elect a new president, vice president, Congress and 338 mayors.
