US President Barack Obama has ordered his team to admit at least 10,000 refugees from Syria in the next year, the White House said Thursday.

Facing criticism that the administration is not doing enough to help Syrians fleeing a brutal civil war, press secretary Josh Earnest said Obama had asked for preparations to "accept at least 10,000 refugees in the next fiscal year," which begins October 1.
