La Reunion authorities said Thursday that a mysterious piece of plane wreckage discovered on the Indian Ocean island had not been identified, but could not rule out it came from a Boeing 777.

Local government officials said in a statement that France's civil aviation investigating authority BEA had been asked to coordinate an international probe into the origin of the debris which has fuelled hopes it could be from the missing flight MH370.
