Security forces in Burundi on Tuesday released leading human rights activist Pierre-Claver Mbonimpa, his lawyer said, a day after his arrest during protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza's bid for a third term.

"Pierre-Claver was just released by the intelligence services this afternoon," lawyer Armel Niyongere told AFP.
