German Justice Minister Heiko Maas hailed Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo as a "hero" after news of his death in Chinese custody on Thursday.

"His non-violent resistance made him a hero in the battle for democracy and human rights. RIP," Maas wrote on Twitter.
