A suspected bomb exploded Sunday at a hotel in the centre of Somalia's capital Mogadishu, a heavily guarded building housing diplomatic missions frequented by government officials and international workers, an AFP reporter said.

A huge blast shook the area, with a thick plume of smoke rising high into the air. The African Union force, which is fighting the Shebab insurgents, confirmed the explosion at the Jazeera Hotel.
