Catalonia's could declare independence on Monday, a regional government source told AFP on Wednesday, as a crisis escalates between Madrid and separatist leaders over an illegal independence referendum.

The region's separatist leaders have called a parliamentary session for Monday to analyse the results of the vote and "according to how the session goes, independence could be declared," said the source, who refused to be named.
