Beijing "has the right" to declare an air defence identification zone over the South China Sea, a government minister said Wednesday, after an international tribunal ruled against its expansive claims in the strategic waters.

"Whether we need to set one up in the South China Sea depends on the level of threat we receive," vice foreign minister Liu Zhenmin told reporters in Beijing.
