Sean Penn and Minka Kelly spotted on dinner date

Sean Penn and Minka Kelly enjoyed a special meal together last week.

The 54-year-old actor treated the 35-year-old actress and three other friends to an expensive dinner at The French Laundry in celebration of Kelly's birthday. TMZ reports the group dined on chicken and truffle mac and cheese, and sang "Happy Birthday" to the star.

"That was their first date, but it was a group setting," an insider told Us Weekly of Penn and Kelly. "It was more of a 'let's see how this goes.' Minka and Sean got along great and had a great time, but it's unclear where it's going."

Penn was overheard to say he and Kelly met at a charity event, reportedly for the actor's Haiti relief organization J/P HRO. The dinner occurred just a week after news of Penn's split from girlfriend Charlize Theron broke. The pair were together 18 months.

Penn has yet to release his latest directorial effort, The Last Face, which stars Theron and Javier Bardem. Kelly is best known for portraying Lyla Garrity on Friday Night Lights, and recently played Eve French on Charlie's Angels and Valerie Stahl on Almost Human.
