Director Richard Linklater, who filmed his family drama Boyhood a few days a year over the course of 12 years, admits the process wasn't always easy on young cast member Lorelei Linklater, his daughter, who is now 20.
"I remember about Year 3, Lorelei came to me and asked me, 'Can my character, like, die, so, I don't have to do this anymore?'" the writer-director recalled at last year's Sundance Film Festival where the movie was screened. "It is cruel to hold a 9-year-old to a 12-year contract, which doesn't exist, by the way. ... But she got back into it and ended up having a good time."
Co-starring Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke and Ellar Coltrane, the film is up for five BAFTA Awards and six Oscars.
