Actress Lindsay Lohan and her mother, Dina Lohan, have filed a suit against Fox News after one of its anchors and a guest made claims about the Lohan's cocaine use.
Sean Hannity, the host of the show Hannity, and guest, Michelle Fields mentioned the Lohans in a Feb. 4, 2014 segment dubbed "The Great American Panel," where the two discussed drug use among celebrities like Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died from an overdose.
"Lindsay Lohan's mom is doing cocaine with her," Fields said during the show.
While Lindsay Lohan herself, said during a conversation with her father, and later took back, that her mother was once on cocaine, the comments sparked a harsh response from their legal team.
According to Yahoo Celebrity, attorney Mark Jay Heller requested on Feb. 18, 2014 an apology and retraction for the "blatantly false, malicious, defamatory and reckless statement" made during Fox's show, which in a way implied the 28-year-old actress would end up like other celebrities who have died because of their addictions.
Because Fox failed to remove the segment, even though it admitted to verifying Fields' statement, the Lohans filed suit in the New York State Supreme Court Tuesday. The documents are seeking payment for damages to the plaintiffs "for the intentional infliction of emotional distress" and requesting the segment be removed from distribution.
The suit also states the comments "hurt their reputations and cost them loss of acting and entertainment contracts and opportunities."
TMZ reports, Fox News sent the Lohans a letter last year explaining an apology had been made on air and stating the segment would be removed from the network's website.
A Fox News spokesperson told UPI in a statement the network plans to defend the case "to the fullest."
"We will defend this case to the fullest. The remark about which Lindsay and Dina Lohan complain was made on live television by a guest nearly a year ago. We removed the segment from our archives altogether last February and also apologized on-air. At that time, the Lohans did not make any demands for money, and we are surprised they are doing so now."
Both Lindsay and Dina have been arrested for driving under the influence in the past. The Mean Girls star recently made headlines after a judge questioned the validity of the community service requirement she completed in London, which was a provision from a probation sentence stemming from her 2012 arrest for reckless driving.
