Feb. 6 marks what would be the 70th birthday of reggae legend Bob Marley, with celebrations and tributes being held around the world.
"Even with his passing more than 30 years ago, Marley's music remains as powerful and as important as ever," Bob Santelli, director of the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, told The Jamaica Gleaner.
"If Bob Marley were alive today, his music would continue to resonate around the world."
In 2014 the Grammy Museum honored Marley by announcing the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, Jamaica would be the Grammy Museum's first affiliate. This year, the organization upped the ante by declaring the late singer's birthday "Bob Marley Day."
"The Grammy Museum will mark the 70th anniversary of Bob Marley's birth by proclaiming February 6 'Bob Marley Day' at the Grammy Museum," Santelli announced. The head curator went on to praise the social good accomplished since the museums partnered.
"Over the past year, the Grammy Museum has conducted numerous classes, teaching the music and legacy of Bob Marley to Los Angeles schoolchildren, and that has been highly successful."
Universal Music Enterprises is celebrating Marley's birthday by teasing the Feb. 17 release of Easy Skanking in Boston '78, footage from previously unreleased performances at Boston's Music Hall on June 8, 1978. In New Orleans, local musicians are holding Marley Gras in tribute, while across the world in Dubai reggae fans can celebrate at a 13-hour beachfront celebration of all things Marley and reggae.
