Television titans Alan Alda, Carol Burnett, Martin Sheen and Candice Bergen have joined the rotating cast of the first Broadway revival of A.R. Gurney's Love Letters.
Directed by Gregory Mosher, the production will open Sept. 18 at the Nederlander Theatre. The first round will star Brian Dennehy and Mia Farrow.
Dennehy will then be paired with Burnett, after which Alda and Bergen will take over the roles.
Next up will be Stacy Keach and Diana Rigg. The staging is scheduled to wrap up Feb. 1 with Sheen and Anjelica Huston as its last two stars.
"Gurney's romantic, heart-breaking and somewhat autobiographical play has long been a favorite of mine," producer Nelle Nugent said in a statement Thursday. "I am so excited to have the chance to bring this landmark play back to Broadway featuring some of the greatest actors of our time."
Love Letters is described in press notes as "a disarmingly funny and unforgettably emotional portrait about the powerful connection of love."
"Two friends -- rebellious Melissa Gardner and straight-arrow Andrew Makepeace Ladd III -- have exchanged notes, cards and letters with each other for over 50 years," a synopsis said. "From second grade, through summer vacations, to college, and well into adulthood, they have spent a lifetime discussing their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, and victories and defeats. But long after the letters are done, the real question remains: Have they made the right choices or is the love of their life only a letter away?"
