Paris - XINHUA

In a provisional estimate, France's national statistics institute, Insee on Friday expected the country's consumer price index (CPI) to fall by 1.0 percent in January due to a seasonal decline in manufacturing costs.

On a monthly basis, "downward pressures on prices in January come mainly from the seasonal fall in prices of manufactured products, due to winter sales, and from a further drop in the prices of petroleum products," Insee noted.

Prices of energy are expected to drop by 4.0 percent while those of manufacturing to inch down by 0.1 percent, according to the report.

Year-on-year, the CPI, a key gauge of inflation, is set to report a positive trend after rising by 0.2 percent.

The Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices is set to fall by 1.0 percent in January from a month earlier. Year-on-year, the figure should rise by 0.4 percent, according to Insee.
