Muscat - Arab today

More than 124,000 seizures worth more than OMR1 million have been destroyed by the Department of Consumer Protection, the agency announced.

During 2012 until 2015, the General Authority for Consumer Protection, in cooperation with the Department of Public Prosecution of Consumer Protection cases in Muscat and the Muscat Municipality, destroyed more than 124,000 seizures exceeding OMR1 million.

The products were seized and withdrawn from the markets during previous years.

According to Hilal bin Saud Al Ismaily, director of the Department of Market Regulation and Control, the seizures included a range of foodstuffs, cosmetics, chewing tobacco, cigarettes, ready-made garments, spices, perfumes, motor oils and other luxury items in violation.

“This action comes within the work of the committee formed to destroy the seizures withdrawn from the markets for violating the Consumer Protection Law, and its executive regulations and specifications and health requirements,” Al Ismaily said.

“The Public Authority for Consumer Protection will continue performing its role and mission to the fullest, and to intensify efforts to protect consumers from all types of offenses that may detract from the rights guaranteed to them by the Consumer Protection Law, and other legislation issued in this regard,” he added.
