Seoul - Yonhap

Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's largest automaker, has been ordered to recall over 100,000 units of its luxury passenger sedan Genesis for a faulty brake system that could lead to accidents, the transportation ministry said Wednesday. The recall affects 103,214 units of the Genesis that were produced between Dec. 24, 2007 and March 16, 2012, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The recall comes as the ministry has confirmed the vehicle's anti-lock brake system may rust, possibly causing the brake system to fail, it said in a press release. It also follows Hyundai Motor's voluntary recall of 27,500 Genesis vehicles sold in the United States earlier in the month for the same problem. The latest recall comes after Hyundai, together with its smaller affiliate Kia Motors Corp., was forced to recall over 662,000 cars sold domestically for faulty brake light switches that may cause the car's ignition to fail. Owners of the Genesis vehicles subject to the latest recall may have their cars' brake system replaced at any Hyundai Motor service center throughout the country from Thursday, according to the ministry. Meanwhile, the transportation ministry said BMW Group Korea, the local importer and distributor of German automaker BMW AG, was also recalling some 5,500 vehicles for defective front electronic modules that may cause the malfunction of various electronic devices, including emergency lights and windshield wipers. The recall affects a total of 5,577 vehicles of 10 different models that were produced between October 2011 and August 2012. Free repair services will be available from Friday at any BMW Korea service center.
