US auto giant General Motors on Friday urgently halted deliveries of two 2015 flagship model pickup trucks after discovering a fault in their airbag safety system.
The firm is contacting a "small" number of customers who already bought the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado or the GMC Canyon to urge them to bring the cars in for repair as soon as possible.
The revelation of the new problem, described by GM as a "fast-moving issue," came after the biggest US automaker recalled nearly 650,000 other vehicles for various problems.
In recent months GM has issued numerous recalls in the wake of a problem with the ignition system on certain models that has been linked to at at least 23 deaths.
GM recalled 2.6 million vehicles with the ignition-switch problem, which can turn off power to a car's power steering and safety airbags while it is in motion.
The latest batch of announcements take GM's 2014 recall total to nearly 30 million vehicles in North America.
The firm said the two pickups covered in Friday's urgent announcement "contain driver airbag connections that were wired incorrectly during the manufacturing process.""This condition affects the vehicles' two-stage airbag system by reversing the deployment sequence and disrupting the deployment timing of the driver airbag stages." it said.
"This condition will cause the driver airbags to not function as designed."
GM said it did not know the total number of cars affected. The company knows of no crashes or injuries from the problem.
Among the recalls announced earlier Friday, the biggest involves the 2010-2015 Cadillac SRX and the Saab 9-4X, two sport utility vehicles that need inspection of a toe adjuster link that could separate. GM recalled 430,555 of the vehicles.
The component affects the wheel system, a GM spokesman said. If loose, the adjuster link, "can cause the vehicle to sway or wander at highway speed."
"If separation occurs while the vehicle is being driven, it would create sudden vehicle instability, increasing the risk of a crash."
GM said it is aware of three crashes and two injuries due to the condition.
GM also recalled 93,834 2013-5 Chevrolet Spark models to address corrosion that can cause the hood to open unexpectedly.
Finally, GM recalled 117,651 SUVs from 14 different models from 2013 and 2014 to address a problem with the chassis control module that could cause an electrical short, leading to stalling. Affected models include the 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon.
GM said it is not aware of crashes or injuries related to the latter two recalls.
