Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the Supreme Committee for Consumer Protection, chaired the committee's first meeting in 2015 to discuss a number of issues including the outcome of previous meeting and following up recommendations on a number of issues.
During the meeting, Minister Al Mansouri emphasised that consumer protection is a top priority for the Ministry as it helps in ensuring social stability in the UAE for citizens and residents.
He commended the efforts being made by all relevant departments to raise consumers' awareness of their rights against fraud. He also stressed on the need for continuous coordination between the ministry and local and federal authorities to promote the culture of consumer protection in line with Federal Law No 24 of 2006.
Al Mansouri said that the initiatives launched by the Ministry of Economy and the Supreme Committee for Consumer Protection have maintained market stability and reduced attempts to monopolise the market, including the arbitrary price increases.
He also emphasised the ministry’s keenness on supporting consumer purchasing power.
During the meeting, the committee members discussed reports outlining key issues relating to the performance of markets and online shopping. They also discussed the results of a survey on the use of Arabic, the UAE's official language, in all economic sectors, a study on e-Commerce sales in the UAE, and measure to ensure safe online shopping.
