President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi
Cairo - MENA

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi underlined on Monday the importance of caring for low-income people and providing goods for all citizens at affordable prices.

Meeting Supply Minister Khaled Hanafi, Sisi asserted the necessity of maintaining consumer protection measures.

The president was assured on measures taken to provide supplies and control prices at markets in all governorates.

The state has managed for the first time to cut wheat imports from 6.4 to 4.6 million tons, a presidential spokesman quoted the supply minister as saying during the meeting.

"Thanks to the newly-applied bread system, we could cut imports of wheat," said the minister.

The scheme has been hailed by the World Bank as a model for application in other developing countries, he said.

Egypt has a strategic reserve of wheat sufficient till January, said the minister.

Efforts exerted to develop the process of storing imported wheat in Alexandria port were reviewed by the minister.

A project to establish five logistic zones in cooperation with two international firms was discussed at the meeting.

He also reviewed a plan to develop the transport network to cut costs of transporting commodities nationwide.
