Greater Amman Municipality signed a $18million soft loan agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to help manage solid waste.
The agreement entails implementing a comprehensive landfill-gas (LFG) recovery system, the first of its kind in Jordan which will be used to generate electricity for delivery to the national grid, replacing electricity produced by grid-connected power plants that for the time being used heavy fuel oil.
Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury and EBRD President Sir Suma Chakrabarti discussed the role to be played by the EBRD during the next World Economic Forum to be held in the Dead Sea.
Fakhoury highlighted most important projects being implemented by the Kingdom such as infrastructure, transport and renewable and alternative energy and water which are to be introduced via partnership between public and private sectors.
Greater Amman Municipality mayor Akel Biltaji spoke about challenges facing Amman and ventures that the municipality is working on to implement in the field of solid waste management to ensure a clean and green city
Chakrabarti expressed support for the current efforts undertaken by Jordan in terms of reforms in various fields and said he understands the size of the burdens placed on Jordan and the importance of providing support to the Kingdom by providing concessional financing for priority projects.
