Passersby will be able to enjoy classical and opera music in Port Said, Damietta, Mansoura and Cairo, between 12 and 16 March, thanks to a new initiative by Mahatat for Contemporary Art, in cooperaton with Teatro Independent Theatre.
'Opera on a Balcony' is the third of a series of tours called 'Art of Transit' that intend to bring art to public spaces, through street performances and artistic interventions. The tours aim to boost access to art, whether in terms of viewing art or creating it.
This time bringing classical music to city balconies, the organisers hope to bring the art form to street audiences in locations not well acquainted with it.
"Pedestrians will be surprised with beautiful music and great performances to whisk them away from their daily chores for a while," Mahatat say in their press release.
In the first 'Art of Transit' tour in late 2014, the Abo Karim marching band and the Kousha puppet theatre troupe, who are known for performing with giant puppets at festivals and protests, toured the same four Egyptian cities.
Besides these tours, Mahatat are also working on an educational component of the project, called 'Face to Face', which includes workshops with local emerging artists.
Teatro Independent Theatre, a troupe founded by visual artist and director Omar Al Moatez Bellah in 2003, aims to "create dialogue between artist and audience, through presenting theatre performances that tackle major issues facing mankind."
