The City of Windhoek cautioned its residents and visitors that as per the high alert warning by the Namibian Meteorological Services, Windhoek might be affected by heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, due to the effects of the tropical cyclone, Dineo.
The warning was issued on Friday in a statement that said due to the tropical Cyclone, effects are expected to reach the eastern part of Khomas Region in the next two days or so.
"The envisaged weather condition may lead to damage to properties, power cuts, flooding and disruption to roads," Lydia Amutenya, Public Relation Officer said.
According to her, flash floods usually result from intense storms, dropping large amounts of rain within a brief period of time.
"Flash floods appear with little or no warning and can reach full peak in only a few minutes. Communities particularly at risk are those located on the eastern and southern areas of Windhoek, and most at risk would be residents in low-lying areas and along riverbeds," she added.
The City fathers advised all those that live in low-lying areas to take special care during storms, as sudden floods might affect them and warned motorists not to try and drive over a low-water bridge if water is flowing strongly across.
