Auckland - AFP

England lock Courtney Lawes Monday vowed no let-up in his hard-hitting style as his two-match World Cup ban expires in time for the vital pool clash with Scotland. Lawes said coach Martin Johnson wanted him to keep playing his natural game when he returns to the team -- although he had had to tone it down at training to avoid injuring other players.Lawes called his ban for kneeing Argentina hooker Mario Ledesma in the head -- the first of the World Cup -- "a bit harsh" but said he was desperate to work out his frustrations when he returns to the field. "I thought I played well. I'm always a physical player and that's how I'm going to be," said Lawes, 22. "I didn't try and do anything malicious. I'm always physical, I don't aim to hurt people that's just part of my game." Lawes, who was forced to sit out England's wins over Georgia and Romania, said his advice from Johnson was "very much just keep doing what I'm doing". "I don't give away too many penalties and I don't do many stupid things either. I just make big hits when I can and do my job the best I can," Lawes said. "I've just been trying to train as hard as I can and not injure any of the boys. I've been reining it in a bit on the training field and just hoping to get another shot this weekend," he added. "I've only been cited once in the five years I've been playing so it's pretty rare, and I don't think it's going to happen again soon." Lawes said the England players took notes as they watched Scotland's "thrilling" 13-12 defeat to Argentina which made their final game of Pool B, in Auckland on Saturday, a must-win. "It was a good game and it's going to make it harder for us this weekend because they're going to come out knowing they have to win," he said. "But at the same time we have to, but we always feel like that and we're going to try and display our dominance." He added that England had moved on since their scrappy 22-16 Six Nations win over Scotland at Twickenham in March, although they would be wary of a team which is fighting for survival."They're a very good team, especially when they're up for a big game. I wasn't playing in that game but I think they've matured a lot since then and we're going to be able to pick them apart hopefully," he said.
