Novak Djokovic will take the world No. 1 ranking into the U.S. Open but the attention will be on his sore shoulder more than his ranking. Djokovic retired in the second set of Sunday's final of the Western and Southern Open in Ohio. He was trailing Andy Murray 6-4, 3-0 at the time and said he wasn't able to effectively serve. He did, however say he believed the week off would put him in position for the U.S. Open. The year's final major tournament begins Aug. 29. The rankings released Monday were the final set before the seedings are determined and the draw made. Djokovic is 57-2 this year and has piled up 13,920 rankings points, well ahead of No. 2-ranked Rafael Nadal (11,240) and third-ranked Roger Federer (8,380). Murray is fourth with 6,535 points. David Ferrer (4,200) passes Robin Soderling (4,145) and is ranked fifth, pushing Soderling to sixth. Gael Monfils (3,165) switches places with Mardy Fish (2,820), moving to seventh ahead of Fish's No. 8 ranking. Tomas Berdych (2,690) remains ninth and Nicolas Almagro (2,380) moves back to No. 10, shoving Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who had 2,350 points, to 11th. Andy Roddick drops six places this week and is 21st in the world. It is the first time he's been out of Top 20 since Aug. 13, 2001. He's the top seed at this week's Winston-Salem Open. The only Top 20 player in that field is No. 17 Jurgen Melzer.
