By Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) can add to his greatness with an impressive win over WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KO’s) on May 5th. Beating a talented fighter like Cotto is an incredible feat for someone like Mayweather, who started out at super featherweight many years ago and has moved up in weight slowly but surely to dominate wherever weight class he goes to. Cotto is far and away the best fighter at 154, and beating will be a huge testament to Mayweather’s greatness in the ring. Cotto has looked almost invincible since moving up to the junior middleweight division and a win over him will be like Mayweather writing his own ticket to the Boxing Hall of Fame. The one win that would certainly cap Mayweather’s outstanding career would be a victory over Manny Pacquiao if Mayweather could somehow lure the tough negotiator Pacquiao into the ring for a mega fight in 2012 or 2013. So far, Mayweather has had terrible luck in trying to get Pacquiao to agree to a fight. It seems like there’s always something blocking the fight from getting made. Some boxing fans think Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum who is responsible for the fight not having been made as of yet. Needless to say, boxing fans aren’t happy with that, but why blame Arum? Why should he want to sacrifice his golden goose Pacquiao to Mayweather by agreeing to let Mayweather fight him. You and I know that Pacquiao would have tremendous problems in fight against Mayweather. It would likely be a mismatch and Pacquiao’s stock would go way, way down after a sound beating from Mayweather. Adding Cotto’s scalp to Mayweather’s resume will be a big feather in Floyd’s cap because Cotto has a lot of respect from boxing fans and because, unlike Pacquiao, Mayweather is fighting Cotto at the full weight for the division instead of looking to get a catchweight handicap to get a big edge on his opponent. That makes a huge difference. Mayweather will get a lot more credit for beating Cotto than Pacquiao did because of his catchweight for the figt. The only negative about Mayweather fighting Cotto is the fact that Cotto was already beaten by Pacquiao in the past. That’s going to take some of the shine away from Mayweather for his victory and if it was me I wouldn’t have bothered facing Cotto at this point in his career. However, all of the other options are pretty much equally bad because almost every fighter out there has been exposed already again and again. There’s nobody other someone like Sergio Martinez for Mayweather to fight and get a lot of credit. If Mayweather takes on Amir Khan, it won’t be a big deal for Mayweather to beat him because Khan has already been exposed a couple of times. Andre Berto has already been exposed as well Kell Brook won’t fight anyone good, so he’s not even worth fighting. Mike Jones fights for Top Rank, so he’s out. He’s also never fought anyone really good.
