Mike Green scored a power-play goal with 5:48 left to play on Saturday, lifting Washington to a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers that knotted their NHL Eastern Conference second-round playoff series at 2-2. Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom scored the other goals for the seventh-seeded Capitals, and goalie Braden Holtby stopped 18 shots as Washington pulled level in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series After a slashing penalty on Rangers forward Carl Hagelin in the third period, the Capitals were quick to capitalize on the man advantage. Dennis Wideman's cross-ice pass found Green, who belted a low shot past Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. Artem Anisimov had a goal and an assist for the top-seeded Rangers. Marian Gaborik also scored for the Rangers, his second straight game with a goal. Ovechkin opened the scoring with 7:17 to play in the first period. Rangers rookie Chris Kreider, trying to clear the puck, sent it right to Ovechkin who unleashed a shot that hit Lundqvist's glove and went in. Anisimov equalized just 1:10 into the second period, but Backstrom's goal at 11:54 of the second pulled the Capitals ahead again. Anisimov fed Gaborik for the Rangers' second goal, with 3:17 remaining in the second. The series shifts to New York for game five on Monday.
