Sydney - Arabstoday

After 36 games the Roar finally surpassed the record held by Eastern Suburbs for the longest unbeaten run in Australian sport, with their 4-0 demolition of Perth Glory. As far as achievements in Australian sport go these days, it is hard to find many milestones which can top the 36-game unbeaten streak of Brisbane Roar. Managing to avoid defeat in a league that has the salaries of its teams capped is hard enough, but to do it for so long deserves special recognition in Australian sporting history. It must be said that it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Brisbane on the way to the magical number 36. At times it seemed as though their meticulous run in the A-League would come to an end, most notably in the 2010 A-League Grand Final where they were two down with just four minutes remaining. Yet, despite the setbacks, media pressure and weight of public expectation, Ange Postecoglou’s side hung in there and on Saturday night capped off their remarkable feat with a 4-0 victory. A double to both Berisha and Nakajima-Farran in the first half secured all three points for the Roar sending them six points clear at the top of the A-League.Despite celebrations in one part of Queensland, another part was left to lick their wounds yet again as Gold Coast United lost for the fourth consecutive time this year. After clawing their way back from two goals down, United could not make their one man advantage against Melbourne Victory count as Carlos Hernandez popped up late to secure a 3-2 victory. The loss sees Gold Coast lose touch on the table as they sit four points behind Adelaide in bottom spot. Finally, Sydney’s apparent resurgence has come to a grinding halt as they recorded back-to-back losses, this time at the hands of Wellington. Sydney were outclassed by a Phoenix side welcoming back Paul Ifill. The Englishman scored upon his starting return in style, but his goal was completely overshadowed by a 40-metre screamer from Tim Brown in the second half. It was Brown’s goal that proved to be the difference in the 2-1 victory.
