London - Arabstoday

The German midfielder battled an ankle injury but did enough to emerge a clear winner, ensuring the domination of the medal by the league's imports continued.Brisbane Roar's Thomas Broich won Johnny Warren Medal at the A-League 2011-12 awards in Sydney on Tuesday, becoming the fourth-consecutive import to do so.Six weeks on the sidelines with a heel injury did little to dampen the 31-year-old's influence, with the German a clear winner in award's voting one season after finishing runner-up in the medal to Marcos Flores.Former Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Broich played just 17 games but finished with 390 votes from his playing peers, ahead of teammate Besart Berisha [252 votes], who was ineligible due to suspension, and Melbourne Victory's Archie Thompson [243 votes].Berisha did not go home empty handed after taking out the league's golden boot award thanks to his 19 goals for the season, while Central Coast Mariners coach Graham Arnold was judged the A-League's coach of the year. One of Arnold's key players, Mathew Ryan, claimed the dual honours of the goalkeeper and young footballer of the year awards. It was the second successive season that Ryan, aged 20, was judged the best youngster in the country.Broich's medal means it is now five years since an Australian player won the award, with then-Newcastle Jets forward Joel Griffiths the last to win it, in 2007-08 season.Since then, New Zealand's Shane Smeltz [2008/09], Costa Rican Carlos Hernandez [2009/10] and Argentine Flores [2010/11] have received the accolade.Hernandez added to his A-League honours, with his goal against the Central Coast Mariners on February 10 awarded goal of the year.Brisbane continued to dominate the ceremony, with the club picking up the fair play award in both the A-League and National Youth League competitions.Roar flyer Nick Fitzgerald won the best player in the latter, with Mitch Mallia of Sydney FC winning the golden boot with 13 goals. In the W-League, Canberra United and Matildas midfielder Sally Shipard took out the Julie Dolan Medal for the best player in the W-League, holding off Melbourne Victory's Jodie Taylor and Brisbane Roar's Tameka Butt.Shipard's team-mate and United shot-stopper Lydia Williams claimed the goalkeeper of the year and players' player of the year awards, while 12-goal forward Michelle Heyman won the golden boot and manager Jitka Klimkova won coach of the year to complete a superb season for premiers Canberra.Melbourne Victory's Ashley Brown won the young player of the year award, and Canberra and Victory were joint winners of the fair play award.Adelaide United's Racheal Quiqley claimed the goal of the year for her effort against the Perth Glory on November 5.Jarred Gillett was awarded the A-League referee of the year, while Kate Jacewicz took out the prize in the W-League.
