Cape Town - AFP

Telefonica depart for the second leg as Volvo Ocean Race leaders after a faultless performance in Saturday's second in-port race just over a month after slumping badly in front of her home fans in Spain. Skipper Iker Martinez, leading the team's third consecutive challenge in the event, struggled home sixth and last in Alicante in October's opening scoring in-port race. Their subsequent victory in the dramatic leg one to Cape Town left the Spanish brimming with confidence. Telefonica again made all the right moves and sail changes, taking charge midway through the hour-long second in-port race under Cape Town's famous Table Mountain and they never looked likely to be overhauled. "We are very happy," Martinez told television reporters later. "It was important to do well here after struggling in Alicante." Victory confirms his boat's position atop the six-strong fleet going into Sunday's second leg to Abu Dhabi. Telefonica lead with 37 points, three clear of Camper of Spain/New Zealand who on Saturday replicated their second place behind their arch rivals in Leg One. Puma took third spot having briefly led on Saturday just a week after being shipped from the world's most remote settlement at Tristan da Cunha for hasty repairs in Cape Town. She limped there following a dramatic dismasting mid-Atlantic. Abu Dhabi, who suffered the same fate as Puma just a few hours into leg one on November 5, were fourth ahead of Groupama (France) and Team Sanya (China). Those results leave Groupama third overall on 24 points, Puma and Abu Dhabi sharing fourth on nine and Sanya on four. The race has a long way to go, finishing in Galway, Ireland next July. There are another eight in-port races to contest and as many legs. In all, the event covers 39,000 nautical miles and more than eight months.
