Andreas Romero shot seven birdies Thursday and finished with a 1-point lead over Seung-Yul Noh after one round of the Reno-Tahoe Open. The tournament uses the Modified Stableford scoring system, which adds and subtracts points rather than relying on the total number of shots taken. With birdies being worth two points apiece, Romero accumulated 14 points. He racked up birdies on the second through fifth holes and made the turn with 10 points. He added to his total with birdies on the par-5 13th and 18th holes, but then shot par the rest of the way, for zero points. The Stableford system awards five points for eagles but subtracts one point for a bogey and three points for a double bogey. After the numbers were crunched, John Mallinger, Ricky Barnes and Josh Teater were tied for third with 11 points. John Daly trailed with 10 points.
