RIYADH - Arab Today

Braving chilly weather, intrepid golfers in teams of four trooped to Dirab Golf and Country Club at the weekend for the 5th Annual CCOR Canadian Open Golf Tournament 2017.
At the end of the Texas Scramble format competition, the quartet of Michael Brennan, Dan Summers, Turk Hussain, and Jad Salim emerged the champion on countback from two other teams.
The winning team posted a net score of 51 in a tie with the foursome of Thomas Quinn, Mathew Pelligrino, Amit Chanda and Theresa Postel and the team of Imran Qader, Thomas A. Merkel, Pascal Cudey and Nick Palce.
Brennan’s team tallied a gross score of 70 (36-34) and had 19 handicap while Quinn’s had 72 and 21 and Qader’s 69 and 18. The teams of Quinn and Qader finished runner-up and third place respectively.
The fourth place went to Niko Ruokosuo, Omar Iqbal, Mike Walters and Bjarni Valtysson who combined for 52 (67-15). Rounding out the first five winners were the team of Kapila Nanayakkara, Richard Morley, Scott Flaucher and Richard Delarue who shot 53 (71-18).
Brennan and his team were level par at the turn but had three birdies against one bogey for a 34 coming in.
Owing to the large number of entries players were divided into two starts of Thursday and Friday. The awards ceremony took place Friday night.
The skill prizes for longest drive men’s and ladies went to Dan McLaughlin and Jude Evans, and the closest to the pin to Ian Hunter.
The tournament organized by Canadian Community of Riyadh in cooperation with Dirab Golf and Country Club enjoyed the full support of players and sponsors. The sponsors are Dirab Golf & Country Club, American Express, Harley Davidson, UPS, Royal Airmaroc, Amana Cooperation, Riyadh Marriott Hotel, Asnaf Al Jazeerah, Air Canada, Turkish Airlines, Black Berry, Carrefour, Queen’s University, Almarai and Tim Hortons.
