Philipp Kohlschreiber beat world No. 2 Rafael Nadal for the first time in his career Friday and earned a semifinal spot in the Gerry Weber Open in Germany. Kohlschreiber trying to defending his 2011 title before home-country fans, beat the Spanish star 6-3, 6-4 behind eight aces. It was just Nadal's fifth loss of the year. Nadal, now 1-8 lifetime versus Kohlschreiber, was playing his second match in two days. He had won the French Open Monday and was making a quick switch from a clay court in Paris to the grass court of Halle. Kohlschreiber converted two of his eight break chances while Nadal went 0-for-3 in trying to break the German. Kohlschreiber won 75 percent of the points on serve. He'll next go against the winner of a quarterfinal match later Friday between third-seeded Thomas Berdych and Tommy Haas. Mikhail Youzhny also claimed a spot in the semifinals. He defeated Radek Stepanek 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in about 2 1/2 hours. Youzhny had 15 break-point opportunities and cashed in three. His semifinal opponent will be either world No. 3 Roger Federer or fifth-seeded Milos Raonic. They split their first two sets Friday.
