Portuguese Carlos Queiroz has accepted an offer to stay on as Iran coach and will quickly sign a new contract, an Iranian football official said Thursday.
Queiroz guided Iran at the World Cup finals in Brazil, but he had said in June that he was ready to quit, claiming he had the support of neither the government nor the federation.
"The contract with the head coach of Iranian national football team will be signed before Monday, probably on Sunday," Abbas Torabian, head of the economic committee of Iran's football federation, told the ISNA news agency.
"Queiroz sent his positive response through email last night and he is supposed to travel to Iran as soon as possible to sign the contract"
The 61-year-old, a former assistant to Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, instilled discipline into an Iranian team which proved stubborn opponents in Group F, holding Nigeria and keeping eventual tournament runners-up Argentina scoreless until Lionel Messi struck in stoppage time.
