Salt Lake City - Arab Today

American Brittany Bowe clocked a world record of 1min 12.58sec to win the women's 1,000m Sunday on the final day of the ISU Speed Skating World Cup stop at Salt Lake City. Bowe beat the previous record of 1:12.68 set by Canadian Christine Nesbitt in Calgary on January 28, 2012. American Heather Richardson's second-place time of 1:12.61 was also inside the previous mark. Ireen Wust of the Netherlands was third in 1:13.33. Bowe's record was just the latest in a spate of world marks in Utah this weekend. South Korea's Lee Sang-Hwa lowered her own 500m world record on both Friday and Saturday and the Dutch men's team pursuit squad also broke their own world record on Saturday. The event, on the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic oval, is the second stop in the ISU Speed Skating World Cup in a 2013-14 season highlighted by the Sochi Winter Olympics in February. Richardson, who won the season-opening women's 1,000m in Calgary last week, maintained the World Cup lead in the discipline with 180 points, 10 ahead of Bowe. In other races Sunday, Japan's Keiichiro Nagashima won the second men's 500m of the weekend in 34.24sec ahead of Ronald Mulder of the Netherlands (34.25) and South Korea's Mo Tae-Bum (34.28). Sven Kramer of the Netherlands won the men's 5,000m in 6:04.59 -- his second triumph in as many races this season. He led a Dutch podium sweep with Bob de Jong second in 6:07.43 and Jorrit Bergsma third in 6:08.13. Source: AFP
