Mclean - UPI

Alabama retains the No. 1 spot in the USA Today Coaches football poll but Oregon moves past Louisiana State for the second spot. Alabama (4-0) is just two points -- with 1,473 out of a possible 1,475 -- of being a unanimous choice for No. 1 in the poll of the 59-coach board. Oregon (4-0) leaps over LSU (4-0) this week after the Ducks routed No. 21 Arizona 49-0 and LSU was a 12-10 winner at Auburn. Florida State (4-0) remains fourth but Georgia (4-0) is up one place to No. 5 and South Carolina (4-0) improves two to sixth, giving the Southeastern Conference four of the first six places in the poll. West Virginia (3-0) remains seventh ahead of new conference rival Kansas State (4-0), which made the biggest move up this week. The Wildcats won at Oklahoma and go from 13th to No. 8. Stanford (4-0) enters the Top 10 at ninth and Texas (3-0) is again 10th. Notre Dame (4-0) is up four rungs to 11th and Florida (4-0) comes in at No. 12. Southern California (3-1) is pushed down one place to 13th ahead of No. 14 Texas Christian (3-0). Wins by Kansas State and Florida State led to the biggest drops in the rankings as Oklahoma (2-1) slips from fifth to 15th and Clemson (3-1), which was beaten at Florida State, is 16th after entering the game ranked ninth. Louisville (4-0) advances to 17th and Michigan State (3-1) is up to 18th while Mississippi State (4-0) matches Notre Dame's improvement of four places to 19th. Nebraska (3-1) is No. 20. Oregon State (2-0), at 21st, is one of four new poll entries this week. Oklahoma State (2-1) comes in at 22nd and Wisconsin (3-1) is 23rd. Newly ranked Baylor (3-0) is at No. 24 while Rutgers (4-0) and Virginia Tech (3-1) are tied for 25th. Michigan, UCLA and Arizona drop out of the Top 25 this week. The Big 12 has seven teams ranked this week while six SEC members, mostly near the top, grace the rankings. Two Big 12 games highlight this week's schedule, with Baylor heading to West Virginia and Texas playing at Oklahoma State. In the Big 10, Wisconsin is at Nebraska and Michigan State heads for Ohio State, which is undefeated but can't be ranked because of NCAA probation.
