United Nations - SPA

The chief of the U.N. agency tasked with defending media freedom on Friday condemned the recent killing of radio host Edison Alberto Molina in the town of Puerto Berrio in Colombia. Molina hosted a radio program on legal affairs, regularly denouncing corruption, according to a statement from the U.N. Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). He is the third journalist killed in Colombia so far this year, it said. Molina died earlier this month after being shot repeatedly while riding his motorcycle home from the radio station with his wife, who was injured in the attack. He was reported to have received several death threats in recent months. “I condemn the killing of Edison Alberto Molina,” said UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova. “It is essential that the perpetrators of the crime, which threatens the rights of Colombians to debate issues of concern, be brought to justice.”
