Pink flamingos at Al Ain Zoo Al Ain - Arab Today A new collection of pink flamingos has been introduced at Al Ain Zoo. As part of its major enhancements and expansion projects, the zoo added the birds to the exhibits surrounding the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre. The centre will feature educational exhibits that celebrate the wildlife and traditions of the desert, as well as the conservation-related vision of the founding President, Sheikh Zayed. The 10 new flamingoes were obtained from a private institution in Dubai. They bring the number of flamingos at the zoo to 90. "Al Ain Zoo is working in collaboration with institutions within the UAE to bring in a unique collection of animals and birds,” said Ghanim Mubarak Al Hajeri, director general of the zoo and Aquarium Public Institution. "This is part of the zoo's expansion project. Given the importance of the centre to showcase the UAE's culture and heritage, and in spite of the availability of flamingo birds across the UAE, Al Ain Zoo always seeks to strengthen its cooperation with local institutions to ensure the right partnerships for a successful approach to wildlife conservation.” Flamingos in the UAE are categorised by the pink colour that they obtain from carotenoid pigments in their food, such as shrimps, planktons, algae and crustaceans. The birds are also known for their large size, long legs and habit of using only one leg when relaxing or sleeping. Flamingos can be seen year round in fresh, saltwater and artificial lakes. They have also been spotted near human habitats, in areas such as Ras Al Khor in Dubai. The zoo is also actively involved in several internationally coordinated conservation projects, working with other like-minded organisations such as Jersey Zoo, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, the Species Survival Commission, San Diego Zoo, the Northern Rangelands Trust of Kenya and the Sahara Conservation Fund. The zoo is open daily from 9am to 8pm, and located on the UAE-Oman border, a straightforward drive from Dubai and Abu Dhabi. With the majestic Jebel Hafeet and the rich expanse of Green Mubazzarah as its backdrop, Al Ain Zoo is one of Al Ain's leading attractions. Source: The National Text for story
