Fasting could lead to several skin-related problems due to lack of food supplements in the body, an issue that could be avoided by eating nutritious food during breakfasting (iftar) and late dinner (suhor), said skin therapist Carol Abboud.
The most common skin problems include hair loss and dryness, Abboud told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Tuesday.
The hair suffers a change in the levels of vitamin A and D in the body while fasting, she said, calling on people to eat green salad containing rocca, carrots, peppers and cucumbers to replenish the hair and skin.
Moreover, she noted that having a source of fat-free protein such as meat can also help avoid hair problems.
On the other hand, the therapist said that fasting could have a positive effect on some skin problems such as allergy towards certain types of food.
Another benefit of fasting is that the skin can take a break of daily makeup and have the chance to breathe, said Abboud, noting the importance of drinking a sufficient amount of water to avoid dry and pale skin.
Abboud warned against the habit of eating too much sweets in Ramadan which could lead to an acne problem, since sugar is stored in the body as fat.
The therapist also noted that the lack of water in the body while fasting could help strengthen the skin's immunity towards infectious diseases and germs, while it could limit the severity of Psoriasis disease.
