Here are some simple and easy ways to prevent cavities in your teeth. 1. Brush Your Teeth This might be obvious, but a lot of people don’t brush their teeth enough. This is responsible for getting rid of food particles from your teeth, but it also gets rid of a lot of cavity-causing bacteria. In addition to this, brushing will get rid of plaque and acids that can eat the enamel on your teeth. Brush your teeth twice per day and after you eat something that’s especially sugary. Also make sure you clean your tongue, as a lot of bacteria can latch onto the surface of it. When you do brush, use a brush that is comfortable and make sure you continue for at least two minutes. You can divide this by thirty seconds for each section of your mouth, which will make sure you hit all areas adequately. Another way to avoid cavities is by not brushing too hard, as this can damage the enamel on your teeth and make them more prone to bacteria and cavities. 2. Use Fluoride You probably use fluoride when at the dentist, but a lot of people don’t use this while at home. This is actually great for fighting cavities, as it protects your teeth and even makes them a lot stronger. When you rinse with this it will get rid of the bacteria and sugars in your mouth that get into your teeth and gums to cause cavities. Fortunately fluoride can be found in tap water, but it’s also easily found in a variety of mouthwash products. 3. Floss! A lot of people avoid flossing because they think it takes too much time, but unfortunately this is one of the biggest causes of cavities for most people. Your toothbrush can only clean so much of your teeth, which is why flossing is so important. This gets the crevices in between your teeth that the bristles just can’t get to. Once you push that floss in, you will be getting 40% of your tooth clean that your toothbrush wasn’t able to. Remember, even if you don’t see food particles come out with floss, you will be getting out bacteria and other things that cause cavities. 4. Diet What you eat has a lot to do with the cavities that you develop. For example, a diet full of chewy, sticky and sugary foods is going to lead to cavities because it allows sugars to get into the mouth more frequently. Bacteria thrive on sugars and will rapidly eat away at your teeth with the more it has available. By cutting down on the sugar you consume you will be starving that bacteria of what it thrives on, which means you will be less likely to develop cavities! Try to eat more raw vegetables and sugar-free foods on a regular basis. If you are going to eat something sugary, then avoid foods that are gooey, chewy or sticky, as these are the worst for your teeth. Also make sure you brush your teeth right after so you don’t allow the bacteria to feed on the sugar for long. 5. Regular Dentist Visits Visiting your dentist for regular checkups might be a pain, but it’s definitely well worth it. These visits will allow your dentist to see how well you are cleaning your teeth so that they can give you advice and guidance. During this appointment your teeth will also be deep cleaned, which will get rid of bacteria and buildup that you might have missed with daily dental care. Dentists have tools that you don’t have and they are able to get a better view, which means their cleaning is going to be a lot more thorough than one you could do. Regular deep cleanings will keep out much of the bacteria that cause cavities, but it will also get rid of plaque and other buildup that you don’t want in your mouth!
