Manila - SPA

Eight people have been killed and more than 140,000 displaced in floods and accidents caused by typhoon Saola in the Philippines, the Office of Civil Defence (OCD) said Tuesday. The storm strengthened into a typhoon as it crossed the northern Philippines overnight, packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometres per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 150 kph, the weather bureau said. It was moving at 7 kph towards Taiwan and expected to be out of the Philippines by Thursday, the bureau was quoted as saying by DPA.
